Sunflower was the first album by The Beach Boys released on their own Brother Records label, in partnership with Reprise. After the commercial failure of '20/20', the band sought a more cohesive and optimistic sound, though the sessions were long and costly. The album received positive reviews but failed to achieve significant commercial success, peaking at number 151 on the Billboard chart.

The sound of Sunflower is characterized by lush vocal harmonies and polished production, with influences from pop, rock, and soul. Notable tracks include 'Add Some Music to Your Day', 'This Whole World', and 'Forever', the latter featuring lead vocals by Dennis Wilson. The album shows a balance between Brian Wilson's compositions and contributions from other members.

Although initially a commercial failure, Sunflower has been reappraised over time as one of the band's best works in the post-Pet Sounds era. It is considered a precursor to the more mature sound they would develop in later albums. Its influence is felt in indie pop and in modern critical appreciation.
