Fire on the Bayou was the fifth studio album by The Meters, released in 1975 during a period of transition for the band. After years of success as an instrumental funk group, they began incorporating more vocals and original compositions, moving away from the raw sound of their earlier work. The album was recorded in New Orleans and Los Angeles, produced by Allen Toussaint, who had collaborated with them before. Reception was positive among funk fans, though it did not achieve massive commercial success.

The sound of Fire on the Bayou retains The Meters' characteristic rhythmic foundation, with George Porter Jr.'s syncopated bass and Joseph Modeliste's drums, but adds layers of keyboards and more polished arrangements. Notable tracks include the title track 'Fire on the Bayou', with its hypnotic groove, and 'Talkin' 'Bout New Orleans', a tribute to their hometown. 'They All Ask'd for You' also stands out, becoming a minor funk classic.

The legacy of Fire on the Bayou lies in being a bridge between the instrumental funk of early Meters and their later evolution toward more commercial sounds. Though not as celebrated as their Josie Records albums, it is valued by 70s funk enthusiasts. Its influence can be heard in later bands that sought to blend New Orleans groove with more conventional song structures.
