«In a Mellow Mood» is the seventh studio album by The Temptations, released in June 1967. It is a concept album of ballads and slow-tempo songs, moving away from the more danceable sound of their previous work. It peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart.
The album includes covers of standards such as «For Once in My Life» (later popularized by Stevie Wonder) and «Ol' Man River», as well as original songs like «I Couldn't Cry If I Wanted To» and «You're My Everything». Production was led by Norman Whitfield, who was beginning to establish himself as the group's main producer.
Although it did not generate major pop chart singles, the album was well received by critics and demonstrated the group's vocal versatility, especially from Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. It is considered a precursor to the more psychedelic sound the group would adopt in the late 1960s.
