The Temptations (also known as the 1981 self-titled album) is the twenty-seventh studio album by the group, released in 1981. It was recorded at Motown studios in Detroit and Los Angeles, and marked an attempt to revitalize the group's sound after the disco era.
The album includes contributions from several producers, notably Clay McMurray and the group members themselves. Although it did not produce major hits on the main charts, the song 'Standing on the Top' (featuring Rick James) reached number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 10 on the Hot Soul Singles chart.
This album is notable for being the last to feature founding member Otis Williams as the only original member, and for including the participation of Rick James, who co-wrote and produced the lead track. The album did not enter the Billboard 200, but reached number 36 on the Top Soul Albums chart.
