This album compiles recordings from three different sessions at Columbia Studios in New York. It features Monk's quartet with Charlie Rouse, Butch Warren, and Ben Riley, plus a session with saxophonist Johnny Griffin and drummer Roy Haynes.

The record includes versions of standards like 'April in Paris' and 'Just You, Just Me', along with original compositions such as 'Teo' and 'Children's Song'. The track 'Pannonica' is a tribute to Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter, Monk's patron.

The album reached number 133 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was reissued in 2002 with bonus tracks. Critics consider it a representative sample of Monk's work during his Columbia period, with a more polished sound than his earlier recordings.
