The album 'Mulligan Meets Monk' was recorded in August 1957 in New York, as part of a series of jazz musician meetings organized by Riverside Records. The session brought together pianist Thelonious Monk and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, two key figures of bebop and cool jazz, respectively.
The original recording included six tracks, but only four were initially released on the 1957 LP. Two additional tracks, 'Lullaby of the Leaves' and 'Sweet and Lovely', were later discovered and added to reissues. The chemistry between Monk and Mulligan was notable, though their contrasting styles created a unique creative tension.
The album was produced by Orrin Keepnews, co-founder of Riverside Records, and featured bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Shadow Wilson. Although not a massive commercial success at the time, it is now considered a jazz classic and an example of intergenerational collaboration.
