Weezer's self-titled debut album, commonly known as The Blue Album, was released on May 10, 1994. Produced by Ric Ocasek (frontman of The Cars), the record was recorded in quick, efficient sessions, with a polished pop-rock sound that contrasted with the dominant grunge of the era. The blue cover and the band photo (with members looking upward) became an iconic visual.

The lead single "Undone - The Sweater Song" became an unexpected hit thanks to its innovative music video directed by Spike Jonze, which showed the band playing in a continuous shot while loose dogs invaded the set. The second single, "Buddy Holly", was also an early viral phenomenon, with another Spike Jonze video that inserted the band into an episode of the TV series Happy Days, boosting album sales to over three million copies in the United States.

The album received mostly positive reviews and has been certified triple platinum by the RIAA. Songs like "Say It Ain't So" and "My Name Is Jonas" became alternative rock classics. Ocasek's production and Rivers Cuomo's introspective lyrics established Weezer's signature formula: catchy melodies, distorted guitars, and an emotionally vulnerable tone.
