The album was recorded between 2015 and 2016, primarily at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, as well as in the homes of band members. Production was handled by Jake Sinclair, who had previously worked with the band on the single 'Back to the Shack'.
Thematically, the record is inspired by California summer and the beaches of Los Angeles, with a sound evoking 1960s and 1970s power pop. The band aimed to capture the energy of their early work, especially their 1994 self-titled debut album.
The album received mostly positive reviews, highlighting its cohesion and freshness. It peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart and was supported by the singles 'Thank God for Girls', 'Do You Wanna Get High?', and 'King of the World'.
