American Soul Man was Wilson Pickett's seventeenth and final studio album, released in 1987 on Motown Records. It was his only album for the label, which attempted to revitalize his career in the funk and dance era.
The album was recorded at various studios in New York and Memphis, produced by Jon Tiven and Sally Tiven. It includes covers of soul classics and original songs, with a more modern pop-oriented sound.
Although it did not generate major sales, the single Love Never Let Me Go received some airplay on soul radio stations. The album is remembered as a dignified close to his recording career, showcasing his still powerful voice.
