I Want You was released in 1980 on EMI America Records, after Pickett's brief stint on Big Tree. The album continued his exploration of funk and contemporary soul of the early eighties.
Recorded at several studios, including Muscle Shoals Sound, production was again handled by Pickett and Brad Shapiro. The album includes a cover of the classic The Temptations song of the same name.
The album did not achieve major commercial impact, but is valued by collectors for its funky sound and Pickett's distinctive voice, representing his last studio work of the decade.
