Join Me and Let's Be Free was Wilson Pickett's first album for RCA Victor after leaving Atlantic Records. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama, it marked a shift toward a more funk and psychedelic soul sound.
The album includes a cover of the Beatles classic Come Together, adapted to Pickett's soul style. Although it did not repeat the commercial success of his earlier work, it showcased his artistic versatility in the 1970s.
Production was handled by Pickett himself along with Brad Shapiro, with whom he had previously collaborated. The record did not produce major singles but maintained Pickett's characteristic vocal energy.
